Mill Creek MetroParks Mill Creek Park was founded in 1891 by Volney Rogers and is the first park district established in Ohio. Mill Creek Park is the largest area of the MetroParks encompassing 2,657 acres of the MetroParks’ 4,500+ acres that wind through Mahoning County. Recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, nature preserves and wetlands, boating, fishing, championship golf, tennis, volleyball, cross country skiing, sledding and fun for the entire family. Lake Newport, the largest of Mill Creek MetroParks’ three lakes, offers 60 acres of open water and 40 acres of wetlands. Lake Glacier is a 40-acre lake with fishing and boating permitted in season. Kayaks and paddle boats can be rented at both lakes. The Newport Wetlands, at the southern end of the lake, provide habitat for a variety of plants and animals. Experience this complex web of flora and fauna by walking the Albert E. Davies Wetland Trail, a boardwalk through the wetlands. The area attracts a variety of species, particularly migrating birds who use the Sanctuary as a resting point on their journey. More than 225 species of birds have been documented at the Wildlife Sanctuary. There’s an elevated observation platform for viewing. Binoculars or spotting scopes are recommended. vickers nature preserve The Preserve consists of diverse habitats, including meadows, woodlands, wetlands and ponds. There are several small streams flowing through the Preserve that flow directly into Meander Creek just upstream of the Meander Reservoir. Hiking is permitted throughout the site.
